DEGREE OF PRIDE ~ SIZE OF GOD – Sept. 6th

September 6, 2011

BIBLE READING PLAN: Isaiah 37-41

MEDITATION VERSE:

“He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.  Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? ” Isaiah 40:11-12

THOUGHTS:

We like to think that we understand God but how can we?  We like to think that we can grasp God but how can we?  God is so beyond any frame of reference available to us in this earthly setting that all comparisons and analogies eventually fall apart and we are left standing in awe.  The irony is that awe is exactly the appropriate response.

Consider the universe.  God created that; God stands outside of that and measures it.  Consider God from that perspective.  Man has tried to organize the universe in to superclusters of galaxies.  There is one called the Virgo Supercluster. Within this supercluster there are smaller groups of galaxies of which one is called the Local Group. Within that Local Group, the second largest galaxy is called the Milky Way. The Milky Way is a large spiral galaxy.  In the spiral arms of the Milky Way (called the Orion Arm) which lies about two-thirds of the way out from the center of the galaxy, there is a solar system. That solar system contains a group of nine planets, as well as numerous comets and asteroids which orbit the sun. Earth is the third planet from the sun in that solar system.  There are approximately 6.8 billion people on that Earth.  I am but one of those billions of people.

How is that for perspective?  Yet, God, who is beyond the scale of superclusters, knows me; ME, one of billions of people on this tiny planet, in this tiny solar system, in this out of the way galaxy; He knows ME and is MY shepherd.  He gathers ME into His arms.  He carries ME in His bosom.  He gently leads ME.

How can that be?  How can I be anything other than in complete awe?

It is as if I would care deeply about some microscopic organism that may inhabit the handle of my coffee cup.  Who are we that God should even be aware of us? We truly are less than dust. We truly are like the grass that withers and is blown away.

Our selfish demands and desires pale when we view them in comparison to the grandeur and greatness of our God.  The offense of our rebellion and disobedience rises to a grotesque odor when we consider the glory of God Almighty.

The reality of the greatness of God leads to a humble and contrite heart.

The creation of a small god allows for a self-centered, prideful heart.

PRAYER: Lord, you are beyond my comprehension.  All praise and glory be to your name.   Amen
