PROTECTING OUR KIDS FROM THEIR GREATEST DANGER – Dec. 15th

December 15, 2012

“And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.” Judges 2:10B

I sit here on this beautiful morning with my mind reeling over the events that have transpired on the other side of this country. I want to believe that it is not real. I cannot imagine how it is real. My mind swims through the murk of contemplation of yet another school shooting.ht-newton-bee-school-shooting-nt-121214-wg-jpg

How do you make sense of the senseless?

The newscasts are full of the same variety of images. The pundits will soon be espousing their opinions about the “how’s”, “why’s”, and “what now” in search of answers; as if they really know. The politicians will grab the spot light with sincere proposals about how to keep this from happening again; as if this was a failure of laws. Religious leaders will attempt to comfort a nation; many wondering if that is even possible.

Anger, forgiveness, hurt, strength, tears, peace, compassion, confusion and fear will all flow past us in the coming months. A year is going to flash past and we will observe this day and it will still be senseless. It will be senseless because the true cause of this tragedy will probably be pushed to the side.

This tragedy is the direct cause of not knowing God.

A world that does not know and love God does these sorts of things. Our world, societies, cultures, countries, cities, communities, and families are broken due to not knowing God. Tragedies, large and small, happen every day because the majority of this world does not know the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We live in a broken world. Every once in a while, the spackle we apply to this world cracks open to reveal that it is still broken.

We can respond to that brokenness with shock and fear. We can take great measures to protect our families from the dangers of this broken world. However, we must not let fear cloud our perspective. This tragedy reveals our greatest need. The greatest danger to our children is not a crazed gunman.

The greatest danger to our kids is not knowing the Lord or the work that he has done.

I can make my house a fortress. I can go to great measures to protect my family from the dangers of this physical world but what does all that matter if their souls are lost. We have nothing to fear from this world. This world can do nothing to the redeemed. What comes next should be feared.

I cannot save my kids. I cannot make sure they are protected from their greatest danger but my God can do that.  Therefore, I must be faithful to the role that my great God has given me as a parent, an uncle, a cousin, a friend, a mentor, and teacher. The consequence of this sin of omission – failing to teach the next generation – is immense. It is like purposefully taking your child to a classroom with a crazed gunman and hoping they will work it out.

I must be faithful to teach the next generation who God is and what he has done. We cannot drop the ball on this one. What is the greatest love that we can show to our children?

“O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old:” Psalm 44:1

The greatest love that we can show our children is that our faith is real.  The most loving gift that we can give them is that of a safe home. The most loving gift that we can give them is to love the Lord our God with all of our hearts, souls, and minds. It is when we show and teach our kids that our faith is real and alive and the most valuable possession that we have, then they will seek the Lord for themselves. The greatest of generations are the ones that teach the next to know the Lord and the work that he has done.

What are you doing to protect your family from its greatest danger?

PRAYER: Lord – I pray that your peace be upon all those associated with the senseless killings in Connecticut; a peace that goes beyond understanding because that is what is needed. Lord, show your love, mercy and grace upon all those who are hurting at deep levels. Father, thank you for overcoming this world. Thank you for not leaving us in this brokenness. Father – I pray for my kids; save them, reach out and draw them to yourself. Lord – give them the gift of eternal life, remove their condemnation and make them one of your children. Father – help me to be diligent and faithful in the role that you have given me; help me to show my kids that you are the one true God, that you are living and active, and that you are the way, the truth and life.    Amen

  1. Thank you for the clarity of this post! Your statement, “A world that does not know and love God does these sorts of things”, is spot on! Godlessness is the problem…not laws or their enforcement. May we step up to the plate as individuals and turn our hearts to God and help others to do the same. Thank you again and Blessings to you and yours!

    • Amen!

      • Bless you my friend! 🙂

  2. You are so right on.
